South Devon CAMRA has recently received the following information from David Lockley, the organiser of the Abbfest, Abbotskerswell's excellent annual beer and food festival:
The plans for Abbfest 2007 are well under way. This year's Festival promises to be better than ever. More than just a Beer Festival (although it is that as well), Abbfest will feature dozens of Devon's top food producers with plenty of free tastings to tempt you and demonstrations by some of Devon's top chefs, as well as what must be the most comprehensive selection of real ales brewed in Devon ever assembled. There will also be a Hog Roast and barbecue to provide sustenance.
This year we are running the festival on the Sunday as well as the Friday and Saturday. On Friday 21st September, the Beer Festival will open at 5.00pm and later in the evening, the Status Quo tribute band 'Status Clone' will be providing the entertainment. On Saturday 22nd, both the Beer and Food Festivals will open at 11.00am. The Food Festival will run until 5.00pm but the Beer Festival will continue until 11.00pm. Entertainment will be provided by the Cider Press Stompers, Newton Bushel Morris and Warts 'n' All.
Abbfest was originally conceived as part of our Harvest Festival Celebration in Abbotskerswell, and this year we hope to include a special Harvest Festival Service in the Marquee on the morning of Sunday 23rd, at 10.00am. We will then open the Beer and Food Festivals at 11.00am. The food side will close at 5.00pm, and the beer will close at 11.00pm, or when it's all drunk!
Once again, there will be FREE busses running from Newton Abbot Railway Station to the festival site, which this year will be a field adjacent to Fermoys Garden Centre, near the Two Mile Oak on the Newton Abbot - Totnes Road. There will also be plenty of free parking available.
Admission to the Festival will be just £2.50, and you will be able to obtain a souvenir glass for £1.00. All profits from Abbfest go to local Devon charities. Last year we raised nearly £10,000 and beneficiaries included Devon Air Ambulance, Rowcroft Hospice, St Mary's Church and many local organisations. This year we hope to raise much more, and one of the main charities we will support will be the Lifeboats.
We do rely heavily on sponsorship to enable us to raise the money for charities, so if you or your business would like to sponsor a beer, please contact David Lockley on 01803 390823 or email@example.com for details. It would be really good if we could have 100 real ales from Devon at Abbfest this year.
We hope that you will come and enjoy this year's Abbfest, which on the Saturday and Sunday will be a real family event. Check out the web site www.abbfest.org for more details and information on the food producers and beers as they become available. The festival is at the Abbotskerswell Cricket Club, on the A381 between Newton Abbot and Totnes.
